Honest Review of Samsung Watch 3

Overview of Samsung Watch 3

It was a cold, rainy Halloween afternoon. Trick or treat in a few hours, but no one, not even my 10 year old, is excited to dress up and dare the elements for candy. While waiting to see if the rain would stop, a Samsung Galaxy Watch ad went live.

My husband and I have been flirting with the idea of getting one for a few months, learning about watches, shopping around prices, and reading reviews. The ad directs us to a path that leads to Verizon. We ended up leaving the store with one watch for my husband and another on our way home for me.

We are absolutely in love with our watches. I've wanted a fitness tracker for a long time and this watch does what I need and more. My husband loves having a watch that also allows him to call and text.

Pros, Cons and Substitutes

The only downfall is the silicone wristband. It irritates my skin so much that I can only wear it during workouts. We ended up buying a metal band for our watch and the problem was solved.

We have had original watches for two and a half years with the aim of keeping them as long as possible. They work well, and we weren't impressed with the Active 2 release. We both love the bezels and don't want to part with that feature.

A few months ago, we started having problems with our watches. They will not connect calls and will randomly stop receiving texts. The nail in the coffin was when we learned that there would be no more updates to the Galaxy Watch. We both knew it was time to upgrade our watches.

We did some research and were really excited about the Watch 3. This watch had everything we were looking for and then some. After shopping, we finally decided to buy a watch from Best Buy.

Unbox, Features and Specifications

In true Samsung form, the box is simple and sleek. Compared to the Galaxy Watch, the Watch 3 is housed in a rectangular case with a white lid which adds to the wow factor when opened.

The watch is laid flat, snugly on the black cardboard. Bronze stands out and is reminiscent of high-end designer watches. The leather bracelet is smooth and adds to the quality of the cut.

My husband and I were both impressed when I lifted the lid to reveal my watch. It's a definite upgrade to what I have on my wrist. I chose 41 mm while he chose 45 mm. Black is classic and looks just as good.

Fitness Tracker

My main motivation for owning a smartwatch was a fitness tracker. I use it every day to track my steps and calories burned through exercise. With over 30 workouts to choose from, adjustments and tracking are easy for every fitness goal. The watch will also automatically detect the workout and start tracking for me.

More features

Watch 3 offers detailed information about each exercise you complete. It measures five heart rate zones: Low Intensity, Weight Control, Aerobic, Anaerobic, and Maximum. Time spent in each zone is broken down in graph and bar chart format on the watch face and in the Samsung Health App.

Exercise duration, total duration, average heart rate, and total calories burned are also displayed. It's easy to customize the workout screen for any workout, and you can easily adjust the audio guide frequency on or off.

Sleep Tracker and Health Monitor

This is where the Watch 3 really shines. This is a huge improvement over the original Galaxy Watch. The sleep tracker is more in-depth, not only telling you how long you slept, but also breaking the cycle, setting a sleep score, and displaying how many calories you burned.

Improved Features Overview

The watch face displays total sleep duration, length of time in each cycle, and sleep score. The Samsung Health app offers more detail, displays graphs and charts, more information related to sleep scores, and tracks your sleep over time. It also offers helpful advice on how to improve sleep quality.

These two new features are pretty cool, but can be sensitive to record. An EKG measures the rhythm of your heart. It can detect signs of atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart rhythm in which the upper chambers beat out of sync with the lower chambers. This feature can be reassuring for those with cardiovascular health issues who want an easy way to monitor their heart.

Overall, this is a great feature for everyone. AFib can occur for a variety of reasons and be asymptomatic. Early detection can help prevent serious cardiovascular events such as stroke, heart failure, and blood clots. A pulse oximeter is now available on the watch itself, which is more convenient than having to place your finger perfectly on the back of your phone.

The watch also offers SOS calling and fall detection. You can easily enable these features via the Wearables App on your phone.

Battery Life and Charging

Battery life is a major point for many. When my husband and I read the reviews on the watch, the biggest gripe was how quickly the battery drained.

That's also a common complaint on the original Galaxy Watch. In the two and a half years we owned the watch, battery life was never an issue for us, so we decided to buy a new watch anyway. As with any device, it all depends on how you use it, and true to its shape, our watches last all day.

We both wear our watches religiously. My husband uses his phone, texting, and to track his steps. The battery lasts all day and he plugs it into the charger every night. I charge mine at night and use it to track my sleep. I keep wearing it all day long to record my workouts and steps. When I take it off, my battery life is usually around 50%.

Charging dock

The new charging dock is slimmer. I like that I can put it on a table or table. Charging your watch using your phone's battery is also easy. All you have to do is enable wireless power sharing in the settings on your phone. Then you put your watch on the back of your phone to charge it.

Final Thoughts on Samsung Watch 3

Overall, this watch is a great buy! It really looks like a watch and the leather strap is much nicer than the original silicone strap. It does not irritate the skin and gives the watch a more luxurious look and feel.

My husband and I both love having bezels. It's a native feature that we love and we wouldn't want to do without it. This is a beautiful upgrade and complements our Samsung phones.

If you're looking to upgrade from an older model, you can't go wrong with the Watch 3. I recommend shopping around. We bought ours at Best Buy instead of through our phone provider, which ended up saving us a total of $200.
