Pyle Pro Wireless Portable PA Speaker System Review

The Pyle Pro PPHP28BA used to amplify Casio keyboard

Today's review features the Pyle Pro PPHP28BA. Pyle manufactures a wide variety of Karaoke-style PA speakers, and most of the information provided in this article applies to them as well.

I frequently browse the warehouse deals section on Amazon. That's a bad idea because I tend to buy a lot of stuff that I don't really need. This Pyle speaker is a great example. I didn't use the second PA system, but I couldn't resist because the PPHP28BA is listed for less than half its regular price.

Although all full price, this speaker will be a tempting choice. It comes with every feature you can imagine, and for those with great singing voices—I don't—Pyle has even provided a wireless microphone.

Throughout this review, I'll be comparing the PPHP28BA with my very capable LyxPro 100W PA speaker.

Description

The Pyle Pro PPHP28BA weighs 23.55 pounds and is encased in black heavy-duty ABS. It is 26.5 inches high, 12.5 inches wide and 9 inches deep. A pair of wheels and two well positioned handles ensure the portability of this device.

This PA speaker delivers 400W of peak power. It works for a continuous output of around 200W RMS.

Nestled behind a sturdy and attractive metal grill are two eight-inch woofers and two one-inch piezo horn tweeters. The various colored LEDs combine to create an eye-catching light show that is guaranteed to spice up your Friday night Karaoke party.

This device is Bluetooth enabled and has an FM radio. It can also play MP3 files recorded to an SD card or USB flash drive. This drive can be used to record music and sound as it plays through the speakers.

A microphone, guitar, assist, and a pair of RCA inputs are incorporated into the rear panel of the speaker. An RCA output and knobs that allow adjustment of bass, treble, mic echo, and volume levels are also present.

Original Condition

Although Amazon has re-certified this system, rechargeable batteries are not safe enough and fail to provide power. Maybe the battery got dislodged and disconnected during shipping. It's also possible that the inspector missed this issue or felt—rightly—that the buyer, because of the cheap price of the speakers, would accept a shortage of spare batteries.

I tried to disassemble the speaker cabinet and check the battery but, unfortunately, can't. This battery is not user replaceable.

Ease of use

Inputs and controls are well identified. The Pyle PA system connects quickly to Bluetooth devices, and every input works correctly.

While not professional quality, the included wireless microphone works well and is fun to play with. I plugged in a wired and powered Boya lavalier microphone. It accurately reproduced my voice, although I had to step back a few meters to avoid feedback. The microphone can be used when playing music.

I added MP3 files to SD card and USB flash drive. As soon as I plugged one of these drives into the proper slot of the Pyle PA speaker, it took priority and started playing.

This device comes with the same remote control that shipped with my LyxPro PA speakers. The remote works fine, as long as it's held within a few feet of the speakers.

Amplifier and Speaker Test

Full, rich sound output at low to medium volume levels, outperforming my LyxPro system. Bass, treble, and midrange tones are reproduced effectively.

Unfortunately, the amplifier leaks, producing and amplifying unwanted sound. As the volume increased to 50 percent, I could hear a low-pitched hum in both woofers, and a series of repeated high-pitched beeps emitted from the tweeter. If I play classical music with quiet parts, this will show when the volume reaches 60 percent. When listening to country or rock music, background noise is less noticeable, and a volume level of 70 percent can be reached before sound quality becomes unacceptable. At higher volume levels, LyxPro outperforms Pyle PA speakers.

LEDs provide a good light show

Light Effect

Various brightly colored LEDs turn on and off when this speaker is operating. This display is attractive; however, I wish Pyle had included a switch that would allow these lights to be turned off when not needed.

Stack support

The output from these speakers can be recorded to a USB flash drive or SD card. Although the operation of this function seems simple, I can't get it to work.

Since I purchased this speaker as a second hand from Amazon, I am not eligible for Pyle endorsement. I kept in touch with them and received a reply stating they were looking into the issue and would get back to me.

The next day, Pyle Support made some suggestions. I followed their advice and, within minutes, the problem was solved and I was able to record. After-sales support from this company is good.

Overall impression

The Pyle Pro PPHP28BA is a feature-packed PA system with great flexibility and good after-sales support. Unfortunately, the quality control appears to be below an acceptable standard. This product is not recommended
